I'm looking for books and writers who write well on the music history and scene in Atlanta. I'm mostly fascinated by Atlanta as a power player in R&B and rap music, but would appreciate something showing me the bigger picture as well. Any recommendations and knowledge on the subject would be appreciated. Articles as well, while we're at it. One of them is moving to Atlanta due to it being centrally located to my family and friends, being a hub for travel, and my chosen career (IT) has numerous prospects in a city that large. As a plus, I've also heard that dating in your 30's as a guy in Atlanta is 'extremely' promising and if you have 'it', you pretty much have an almost. I moved to Atlanta over two years ago and was single for about 6-9 months before meeting my girlfriend - I was pretty active in the dating scene too. Generally, dating in Atlanta was one of my best experiences after living in Cleveland, Toledo, Cincinnati, OH and Warner Robins, GA (WR wasn't hard to beat).

I'm trying to figure out where the Venn diagram on these two things overlap:

  • Low cost of living

  • Good gay scene (large number of gays, not all closeted, not all bottoms)

Seems like you have to pick one or the other.

If you look at most 'good' gay dating scene cities, you get HIGH cost of living areas:

  • New York City / Tri-State Area

  • LA

  • Atlanta

  • San Francisco

  • Seattle

  • Orlando / Miami / Ft Lauderale

  • Etc

And if you look at any low cost of living metro area, the area's dating apps seem to be empty, where everyone has no face pic, everyone's a bottom 'who just wants to suck' (while hiding from their wife), and the number in general is low.

Are we gays doomed to only live in overpriced cities?

(As far as I know, the only affordable city, compared to the others at least, with a lot of gays, is Chicago. I guess the 'murder capital of the USA' branding keeps the cost of living low. I hear Dallas is cheap for a major city, too, while being a big gay city, though it's 90% bottoms.)
